Tahira Ebrahim, Muslim Perspectives Consultant

TahiraTahira Ebrahim is an advocate for women’s rights, particularly in the areas of access to education and freedom from domestic violence.  Tahira spent several years learning Arabic, and classical Arabic literature.  As a graduate from both the University of Calgary and the University of British Columbia, Tahira is now focusing on examining the emotional and mental impacts of immigration and settlement upon immigrant children’s performance in the classroom.

Tahira has worked for several organizations in addressing immigrant issues including the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethical Leadership, the EthnoCultural Council of Calgary, and with the YWCA. Tahira has also been an advisor to the UN on the 2009 World Programme of Action for Youth, contributing to issues of youth civic engagement, rights for young women, and youth and intergenerational issues.

Tahira has contributed to Schema Magazine, an internet periodical examining identity issues of immigrant youth in Canada, and has also written on issues of South Asian diaspora communities.  Tahira is currently spearheading an interfaith/intercultural initiative at the University of British Columbia to encourage students to engage in dialogue on interfaith and intercultural issues, and mobilize students to address cross cultural conflicts that arisen due to Canada’s evolving diversity.
