As a student midwife at Maternidad La Luz Birth Center in El Paso Texas, Sandra Iturbe is dedicated  to serving women on both sides of the U.S/ Mexican border, working on a variety of  maternal issues and topics that arise with childbearing and with the unique cultural/political experience of living on the border. Identifying herself as Native American was a process that has helped heal her and has inspired her to learn about the Mexica tradition. She is currently learning how to run sweat lodges and other ceremonies for pregnant women in her community. Accompanying women on the battlefield that is birth, has shaped Sandra’s life mission and has guided her on her path to being a resource to women everywhere. She realizes that through midwifery she has the opportunity of helping women with body image issues and other such issues that obstruct a healthy relationship with one’s self. This makes pregnancy an optimal time for self-work and  through that work we can become better mothers. A healthy birth experience is the ultimate empowering experience, recognizing and facilitating that is Sandra’s work.
